Using the financial tools
What can I do with SmartMoney Coach?
Use the Budget Calculator to estimate monthly income, expenses, savings, and unallocated cash; the Savings Planner to estimate progress toward one savings goal; the SFin Score to review four indicators of financial well-being; and the Investments page to learn general investing concepts and estimate hypothetical growth. The Blog also offers educational articles.
How does the Investment Growth Estimator work?
It estimates a hypothetical future value from a starting amount, monthly contribution, assumed annual return, and time horizon. It assumes a steady return compounded monthly and contributions at each month’s end. Actual returns vary and may be negative; the estimate excludes volatility, inflation, taxes, and fees. It is not a forecast or investment recommendation, and entries are not saved.
What currency do the calculators use?
The Budget Calculator and SFin Score display amounts in US dollars. Enter amounts in dollars for consistent results.
Does the Budget Calculator save my budget?
No. Budget Calculator entries are kept in the page while you use it and are not saved to your account or database. Leaving or refreshing the page clears those entries.
How do comments on blog posts work?
You need to sign in to submit a comment. Comments are reviewed before they are shown publicly. Please keep feedback respectful and do not post private financial information.
How do site reviews work?
Signed-in users can submit one-to-five-star reviews. Reviews are held for moderation before they appear publicly. Approved reviews are shown highest-rated first on the Reviews page and the homepage. Do not include private financial or account information.
How does the Savings Planner estimate my timeline?
It subtracts your current savings from your goal and divides the remaining amount by your monthly contribution, rounding up to a whole month. You can also enter a future target date to estimate the monthly contribution needed. The estimate assumes the same contribution each month and does not account for interest, fees, taxes, or changing contributions. The planner handles one goal at a time and does not save entries; refreshing or leaving the page clears them.
How is the SFin Score calculated?
The score totals four factors worth up to 25 points each: savings rate, emergency-fund coverage, debt-payment ratio, and monthly cash-flow margin. Enter all five amounts; use 0 where appropriate. Take-home income and essential expenses must be greater than zero for the score to be calculated. Expand “See scoring ranges” on the score page for the exact thresholds.
What do the SFin Score inputs mean?
Take-home income is what you receive after taxes and payroll deductions. Essential expenses are typical monthly necessities such as housing, basic food, utilities, and necessary transportation. Debt payments are monthly payments toward debts. Monthly savings and investments are regular contributions. Emergency savings means accessible cash reserved for unexpected costs.
Accounts and privacy
What is stored when I create an account?
Supabase Auth manages your email, password, and sign-in session. SmartMoney Coach stores your required first and last name and username in your account profile; birthday is optional. Names and birthday are private and are not published with comments or reviews. You can update your personal details, username, email address, and password in account settings. The current version does not save budget entries, savings plans, or SFin Score inputs to your account.
How do I recover a forgotten username?
On the sign-in page, choose “Forgot username?” and enter the email address associated with your account. If there is an account for that email, you’ll receive a secure sign-in link; after you verify it, your username appears on your account page.
How do I reset a forgotten password?
On the sign-in page, choose “Forgot password?” and enter your account email. Follow the reset link sent to your inbox, then choose a new password on the site.
I didn’t receive an account email. What should I do?
Check your spam or junk folder and confirm that you entered the email address associated with your account. Email delivery depends on the connected Supabase project and its email configuration; contact the site owner if the issue continues.
About the estimates
Is the SFin Score a credit score or financial advice?
No. It is a simple educational snapshot based on the values you enter. It is not a credit score, a prediction, or personalized financial, tax, or investment advice. Financial situations and appropriate goals vary.
Why does the SFin Score need every input?
A blank amount could mean either “not entered” or “zero,” and treating missing information as zero could make the result misleading. Enter each amount, using 0 when it truly does not apply. Income and essential expenses must be positive because the score uses them as ratio denominators.
